Starving Artist's Sage Advice: Tips on beating Art Block:

Art Block is (obviously) a mental difficulty. It has a tendencey to spring out at the best of us when we least expect it. Professional artists are well aware of its existence.

But professional artists depend on their ability to produce work every day. Art block cannot be allowed to take over.

So, here’s some advice on how to get over art block when it happens.

1. Sketch.

Do something quick. Do lots of quick things. Keep working, no matter how horrible it looks to you, and keep moving. This helps you get through the “bad art” and back into “good art”

2. Switch things up.

Use a different media, do a life drawing, make a switch from your usual method. Help yourself get into a new mindset. Try something new. Sculpt.

3. Draw (here we go) fanart. (Or just pick up a random idea from just about anywhere)

Take a character or a scene or an object that you like, or borrow another artist’s style for a day. This can help if you’ve got a dry idea well. Another method is to take something that someone else did and redraw it in your own style. Go to a random character generator, or type in a letter to Google and make something out of that. Create a world based on an object at hand. This doesn’t need to be good, just let yourself make something silly. This generaly helps when you feel completely devoid of inspiration.

4. Take a walk.

Get away from your studio for a little while. Observe the world carefully. You might get inspiration from a leaf or the way a person is dressed orthe tilt of a person’s head. Get out of yourself for a while and refresh your view on the world. It’s hard to be an artist and a complete shut-in.

5. Hate it? Look at your old work.

You’ve come a long way since three years ago, remind yourself of that with a quick tour through the old work. It helps you regain your perspective and your determination to become better.

Pricelists Industry vs Fandom.

If anyone would care to donate a coloured comic page for the comic industry standard list I’m willing to accept one and will give credit c8 I would’ve made one if I had an example but I don’t -A-

But yes that’s off my chest.

Of course this is based off my own browsing over price lists and how I work unfortunately my commissioner homie went idle so I can’t confirm the most vs the least one can spend.

I’ve only found one artist thus far that charges nearly as close to industry standard. Even then it’s under the standard. As far a I’m concerned anyone under the standard shouldn’t have complaints about expensive art. Fandom average is hardly one you can live by.

Would you like to get paid $30 for 3-7 days worth of work?

ahahah ok, this actually made me remember one moment that happened on a local Con this summer, we were doing commissions there, and we were drawing A5 format chibies for 5LT(2$) they were lined, colored and looking all nice and this girl comes to us asking about prices and we tell her that chibi drawing is 2$ and she said: wow that`s too expensive and walked away.

seriously though. I sell my stuff for so cheap when I could get away with much more. Mostly because my friends are either highschoolers or college students and I can understand not having access to or having the money in general, but I’ve sold a print of an unfinished piece for $175 before to an artist/art collector friend, so I know my stuff is worth or close to being worth industry standard prices.

Its hard to see people whine at me that $10 is too expensive for a fully shaded single body when i should be selling them for more 8( But I know a lot of other people enjoy the prices because they can actually buy stuff at that price, so it’s worth it for them more than anything.

Lol. this reminds me of a convo I had with someone on DA the other day. Went like this (through notes):

Person: I need someone to draw this using muro, or atleast a anime style of her for free ;-; if you can’t do you know anyone?

Me: “I dont work for free, sorry! No one I know works for free either. If you want something drawn, it’s best to hire someone. O:”

Person: “WOW CONGRATULATIONS!

You are the 50th person to say “no” and “Sorry” in a reply :D”

Me: “I don’t know what to tell you. If you want a service done, like artwork, you need to pay for it or atleast expect to pay for it. The error was assuming that someone would want to do the work for free.

It’s nothing personal against you. Something you have to understand is that a lot of professional artists depend on their art to support them (including myself). When you ask us to make you something for free, it is sort of like us asking you to go to your job for a full day with no pay. I don’t want to do my job (my art) for free and I certainly don’t think you would want to work at your job for free either.

So, as I said before, my suggestion is to save your money and hire someone to do the art for you. If you don’t make any money or don’t make a lot of money then I think you will just have to decide if it’s something you really want. It’s sort of like anything else in life; you have to prioritize.

And sure, you might get someone along the way who says “yes” (most likely someone who is just starting out) but you will get a lot of “no”s along the way for the same reasons I stated above.”

The thing that kills me though is that I went to their page and some one did end up drawing it for free for him. Someone with a decent amount of talent too :( Makes me sad!

People tell me they don’t know how to price their work.

When in doubt, use industry standard, or work per-hour instead of coming up with a flat fee. I started charging $20 per hours for almost all of my “fandom work” (sometimes $15/hr and sometimes $30/hr depending).

Not only has that weeded out unwanted clients - as I do not want to work for someone who will make a sour face and throw money at me after I spend 5 hours of my time at a convention on a drawing for $40 (Otakon 2011) - but it had made the minimal time I have free for commissions worth it to me.

Think about it this way - if you average out time spent on a piece versus price, you should at LEAST be charging minimum wage.. And in my opinion, you should be charging double or tipple minimum wage.

I understand that artists just starting out and a lot of artists in general are insecure about their work and whether or not people would ever buy their stuff.

All I have to say to you guys is, I understand, I REALLY do, but please stop. It really does bring down the entire industry and subculture because expectations for prices are low. It’s a lesson that I didn’t learn until I was in college and learned the industry prices, and I want to pass that on to people.

If you don’t think your work is worth more then $5, then spend 15 minutes on it ($20/hour). Or, you know, whatever.

But yeah IDK MAN I guess that’s just my opinion and I don’t think the subculture will change anytime soon, because most of the people buying commissions are teenagers (as adults are more able to pay for industry-priced work), and y’know teens aren’t made of money, but the person above me made a good point: if it’s something you want, save and pay for it. It’s like making any big purchase - you have to prioritize.

Thems my thoughts.

Edit: as a side note I tend to appreciate it a lot when people tell me they’ve saved to get a commission from me at the prices I [have to] charge. It makes me feel good, and special, and important. I’m sure other artists would appreciate it as well.

My stuff is about to get expensive.
